The 2016 Medicare Shared Savings Program results were announced in November. Thirty one percent of ACOs participating achieved savings in the 2016 performance year, amounting to $700 million dollars in shared savings. Shared savings has slowed among older ACOs. The high performing ACOs performed notably better compared to their low performing peers; high performing ACOs cut inpatient spending by 5% while low performing ACOs saw an over 8% increase in costs. Maryland had twenty six ACOs participating in 2016, only eight achieved savings. The average quality score of the Maryland ACOs was 97.8%, which is 5.2% higher than the national average quality score of 92.6%.
